Newsletter 74 – Is It a Good Time to Invest in a Supercar?

IS IT A GOOD TIME TO INVEST IN A SUPERCAR?

Investing in supercars or collectible cars in South Africa can be compelling, but whether it’s a good time depends on your goals, risk tolerance, and long-term vision. Let’s break it down:

Market Trends & Growth Potential

Collectible cars (classics and rare models) have significantly outperformed traditional investments over time.
Globally, collectibles appreciated by 129% over the previous 5 years, and 404% over 10 years, versus gold at 195% and the JSE All-Share Index at 82% over the same decade.

Growing collector culture:

Despite economic headwinds, high-net-worth individuals are investing more in classic and high-performance cars, driven by nostalgia and potential financial returns.
South Africa’s supercar market is projected to increase by 9.1%, outperforming Africa’s average mainstream investment growth.

Recent performance shows variability:

In 2023, the classic, supercar and collectible car market dipped by about 6%, making it the second-worst performing asset class according to Knight Frank. However, some marques like Ferrari and Lamborghini still appreciated.

Price corrections can be healthy:

One Knight Frank commenter noted:
“In 2023 … Classic car values in South Africa dropped by 6%… It’s a correction in the market and that’s good for everyone in the collector car world as it prevents a really big bubble that would burst with more potency later.”

Operational Costs Are Real
Buying a supercar is only an investment if it appreciates in value. It takes knowledge of the industry and homework. It’s important to engage with a specialist company like Ferris Cars, who can advise on the ins and outs of finding, funding and purchasing the correct vehicle for your specific needs and criteria.

South Africa’s Unique Advantages

● Climate advantage: Dry and mild weather, especially in places like the Western Cape, helps preserve vehicles better than humid or cold climates.
● Automotive heritage: South Africa has a surprisingly rich automotive history, unique models and a healthy supply of modern classics.
● Asset security: Despite economic uncertainty, automobiles can be a safer investment than property and traditional investments. They are movable assets, attract no capital gains, and unlike traditional investments, they are tangible, physical assets that can be enjoyed.

Is It a Good Time to Buy?

For long-term appreciation and enjoyment, yes — the collectible market is growing. But if you’re seeking quick gains, be cautious.
Investing wisely requires deep knowledge, network access and patience. You also need to factor in maintenance, insurance, and storage costs.
There’s a temporary dip in the market, which shrewd investors will recognise as a buying opportunity. However, navigating it requires expertise, which is why you need Ferris Cars.

Final Thoughts

If you’re passionate, financially prepared, and looking at a long-term, dual-purpose investment and enjoyment, then now is a solid time to invest in supercars or collectible vehicles in South Africa, especially rare or historically significant ones.
However, if you expect short-term gains or lack access to expert valuation and preservation infrastructure, the risks might outweigh the potential upside.

If you would like help identifying specific models or finding trusted insurers, Ferris Cars is the company to contact. With over 30 years of in-depth knowledge of the supercar, collectible, and classic market, Ferris Cars is more than equipped to ensure you make an informed decision when purchasing your next investment.
Ferris Cars also offers a world-class service department, crypto payment options, and insurance and finance facilities.

Newsletter 73 – 430 SCUDERIA vs 458 ITALIA

430 SCUDERIA vs 458 ITALIA

Sibling Rivalry in Rosso (and Gold)

Once upon a racetrack, two siblings roared into life from the hallowed gates of Maranello. One, bred for raw aggression. The other, sculpted for sleek sophistication. Both blessed with beauty, bloodlines, and that unmistakable Ferrari fury.

Yes, these two Ferraris are bonded not just by badge, but by matching golden shoes and Prancing Horse pedigree.

Meet the 430 Scuderia and 458 Italia—two generations of Italian perfection, locked in a sibling rivalry that’s spanned over a decade. And guess what? You don’t have to choose sides. You just have to decide which one you want in your garage.

Ferrari 430 Scuderia – The Track-Hardened Twin

Think of the Scuderia as the older brother who traded his tuxedo for a race suit. Born in 2009, the 430 Scuderia was Ferrari’s answer to the purist’s cry for more speed, less fluff. It shed over 100 kg compared to the F430, gained sharper aero, a faster-shifting F1 gearbox, and became—by all accounts—a street-legal missile with manners.

But this one? This isn’t just any Scuderia.

  • It’s 1 of just 12 worldwide with factory-painted gold Scuderia stripes.
  • It’s the only one of its kind in South Africa.
  • And it wears the signature plate of F1 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen, making it a collector’s holy grail.

The 19-inch factory-painted forged gold wheels, carbon ceramic brakes with Rosso calipers, full carbon fibre trim, LED steering wheel, and Ferrari race harnesses aren’t just features—they’re badges of honour. This is Ferrari at its most visceral, unapologetic, and intoxicating.

Fun Fact: Michael Schumacher helped fine-tune the Scuderia’s handling, and it shows. The car hits 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and sounds like an F1 car that’s missed curfew.

Ferrari 458 Italia – The Sleek Younger Star

Then came the 458 Italia in 2011. Sleeker, faster, sexier. Where the Scuderia shouts, the 458 sings—a high-revving, naturally aspirated aria performed by a 4.5-litre V8, good for 570 hp and a top speed north of 325 km/h.

With its Rosso Scuderia exterior, Project Kahn Monza Superleggera wheels, carbon fibre interior package, and electrically adjustable sport seats, the 458 is a gentleman’s thoroughbred with a firecracker soul.

And let’s not forget the Ferrari Power Warranty until September 2025—because nothing says “drive me” like confidence on paper.

Jeremy Clarkson once said of the 458:

“It really is one of the all-time greats. It’s a car that flatters your driving and rewards your daring.”

A supercar that can glide through Sandton traffic or tear up a mountain pass, the 458 Italia is proof that performance and polish aren’t mutually exclusive.

Ferris Investment Insight

Both cars are appreciating assets in today’s classic supercar market.

  • The 430 Scuderia, especially in rare specs like this, is increasingly difficult to find, especially with authentic race heritage like Räikkönen’s signature and low mileage (only 12,507 km).
  • The 458 Italia marks the end of an era—Ferrari’s last naturally aspirated V8 before the move to turbocharging. Its design by Pininfarina and raw, unfiltered performance make it a future classic already climbing in value.

One is the raw emotion of Ferrari’s past; the other is the sleek confidence of its future. Either way, you win.

🏎️ Which One’s for You?

Are you a Scuderia disciple, chasing track-day thrills and carbon-laced speed?
Or a 458 connoisseur, drawn to the perfect balance of aggression and elegance?

We won’t judge. We’ll just hand you the keys.

Aston Martin DBS Volante.

Some cars are fast. Some cars are beautiful. And then, there’s the Aston Martin DBS Volante—a car that effortlessly blends both into a package of pure, open-air exhilaration. This is not just another convertible grand tourer; it’s a statement of refined aggression, handcrafted luxury, and pulse-raising performance, all wrapped in an unmistakably British silhouette.

DBS Volante

Born from Bond and Built to Thrill

The DBS name is no stranger to cinematic fame. The original Aston Martin DBS first appeared in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, piloted by George Lazenby’s James Bond. Fast forward to 2006, and the name was revived for Daniel Craig’s debut in Casino Royale—this time as the modern DBS, a harder-edged, high-performance evolution of the DB9.

The DBS Volante, introduced in 2009, was Aston Martin’s answer to the age-old question: How do you make something already stunning even more desirable? The answer? Take the already breathtaking DBS Coupe, remove the roof, and let the naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 sing in all its glory.

A Limited Production Masterpiece

DBS VolanteWith just 845 units ever built, the DBS Volante remains one of the rarest open-top Aston Martins ever produced. It’s a perfect balance of grand touring luxury and raw performance, offering the best of both worlds—the sophistication of a grand tourer and the firepower of a supercar.

The Morning Frost White DBS Volante we have at Ferris Cars is a true collector’s gem. Finished in a sleek Obsidian Black Leather Interior with White Stitching, it oozes understated elegance with a hint of menace. TheDBS Volante wheel Piano Black Fascia Trim and Sport Seats with the iconic DBS logo add to the exclusive feel, while the 20″ Sport Diamond Silver Wheels perfectly complement the car’s presence.

Under the bonnet lies a 510 bhp 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12, sending its power to the rear wheels via a Touchtronic 2 automatic transmission, ensuring effortless yet electrifying acceleration. Hit the open road, drop the triple-layer fabric roof, and let the V12 roar through the canyons, coastlines, or city streets—this is grand touring at its finest.

The Technology of Speed and Control

DBS Volante

Speed is nothing without control, and Aston Martin ensured that the DBS Volante delivered a thrilling yet composed driving experience:

  •  Carbon Ceramic Brakes – Originally developed for Formula 1, these brakes provide race-bred stopping power while being significantly lighter than conventional steel brakes. They’re also fade-resistant, meaning consistent performance, whether on the track or a spirited mountain pass.
  • Bang & Olufsen Sound System – The DBS Volante’s V12 might be the best soundtrack, but for those rare moments when you want something different, the Bang & Olufsen premium audio system delivers concert-hall-level sound quality.
  • Adaptive Suspension & Dynamic Stability Control – Whether you want a comfortable GT cruiser or a sharpened weapon for the twisties, the DBS Volante adapts to the road with precision and poise.
  • Handcrafted Luxury Meets Performance – Every DBS Volante is handcrafted in Gaydon, England, making each one unique. The leather is hand-stitched, the carbon fibre components are sculpted for both beauty and function, and every detail is obsessively refined.

Why This DBS Volante is Special

With only 43,154 km on the clock and a 1-year unlimited mileage warranty, this DBS Volante is a turn-key investment in automotive excellence. It’s the perfect fusion of Aston Martin’s racing DNA and their timeless commitment to handcrafted luxury.

Collector’s Corner: Ferrari 308 Dino GT4 – An Underrated Investment Gem

“Dino” – a name that once set Ferrari purists on edge, but now? A goldmine for collectors.

The Ferrari 308 Dino GT4 was the first Ferrari ever designed by Bertone, breaking away from Pininfarina’s traditional curves to introduce a striking wedge-shaped design that would define the 1970s. More importantly, this was Ferrari’s first mid-engine V8, a layout that would go on to power some of Maranello’s most iconic machines.

Originally badged as a Dino, Ferrari later rebranded the model under its own name—cementing its place in the marque’s history. Today, well-preserved examples like this one are skyrocketing in value, with collectors recognising its historical importance and unique appeal.

This 1975 example finished in Rosso Corsa over a Black Velour Interior is a true time capsule, complete with:
✅ Original Cromodora Dino Wheels
✅ Original Steering Wheel & Leather Dashboard
✅ Meticulously Maintained – Full Service History
✅ Includes Tools & Spare Wheel

With only 35,000 km, this Dino 308 GT4 is not just a piece of history—it’s a solid investment opportunity in Ferrari’s evolving legacy.

Engine Note of the Month: Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale – A Symphony of Speed

Some engines growl, some roar—but the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale screams like an F1 car at full tilt. This is a car built for purists, a raw, unfiltered expression of Ferrari’s racing DNA, and one of the finest-sounding V8s ever created.

Born for the Track, Built for the Road

Inspired by Ferrari’s one-make Challenge racing series, the 360 Challenge Stradale is not just a track-focused version of the 360 Modena—it’s a different beast entirely.
🔴 110kg lighter than the standard 360, thanks to extensive use of carbon fibre, Lexan windows, and a stripped-down interior.
🔴 Racing-tuned suspension & aerodynamics—borrowed from Ferrari’s GT racing division.
🔴 F1-style gearbox shifts in just 150 milliseconds—blisteringly fast for its time.

The Soundtrack: Pure Ferrari Perfection

The Challenge Stradale’s 3.6L naturally aspirated V8 delivers 425 bhp, but its real magic lies in its sound:
🔊 High-revving scream at 8,500 rpm—an unmistakable F1-inspired shriek.
🔊 Titanium exhaust system, reducing backpressure and creating an aggressive, razor-sharp note.
🔊 Race-spec intake and exhaust tuning, making it louder, sharper, and more aggressive than any other road-going 360.

The best way to describe the 360 Challenge Stradale’s exhaust note? Imagine a Ferrari 458 Speciale mixed with a 2004 F1 car, and you’re close. It’s a spine-tingling, hair-raising symphony of Italian fury, and it only gets better as you push it toward the redline.

  • Last Naturally Aspirated V12 Before Hybridisation – The 599 GTB houses Ferrari’s legendary 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12, producing 612 bhp, making it the most powerful front-engined Ferrari at its launch. With Ferrari moving towards turbocharged and hybrid powertrains, naturally aspirated V12 Ferraris are becoming increasingly rare and desirable.
  • Limited Production & Rising Value – The 599 GTB was produced in relatively limited numbers compared to modern Ferrari V12s, and well-maintained examples (especially those in Rosso Corsa) are seeing a steady appreciation.
  • First Ferrari with F1-Trac – This was Ferrari’s first-ever road car to feature F1-Trac, an advanced traction control system derived from Formula 1, giving it unmatched grip and stability for a front-engined supercar of its time.
  • Bespoke Spec – Carbon Galore & Challenge Wheels – The Carbon Fibre LED Steering Wheel, Carbon Fibre Bucket Seats, and Carbon Fibre Dashboard are rare and highly sought-after options. Challenge Wheels give the car a track-ready aesthetic while maintaining road-going usability.
  • The Ultimate GT Experience – Unlike hardcore Ferraris, the 599 GTB blends extreme performance with long-distance comfort. The Bose Sound System, full Owner’s and Service Books, and included trickle charger make this car not just a collector’s item but also a Ferrari you can truly drive and enjoy.

Key Features

  • F1-Derived Engine – The Enzo Ferrari’s 6.0-litre V12 sits under the bonnet, offering a symphony of high-revving aggression. This is as close as you’ll get to a road-going Ferrari Enzo without the multi-million-pound price tag.
  • Carbon Ceramic Brakes – A technology first seen in Ferrari’s Formula 1 cars, providing unbelievable stopping power and longevity, making them perfect for high-performance driving.
  • Scuderia Fender Shields – A hallmark of Ferrari’s motorsport pedigree, the shields represent the marque’s rich racing history and add prestige to the car’s presence.
  • Challenge Wheels with Rosso Calipers – A striking combination that enhances both aesthetics and performance, as Challenge Wheels were originally developed for Ferrari’s one-make racing series.
  • Unlimited Mileage Warranty Available – A rarity in the world of exotic cars, this warranty makes ownership worry-free, whether the buyer is looking to enjoy the 599 GTB on open roads or keep it as a collector’s piece.

Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano rear

Final Thought:

Why This 599 GTB Fiorano is Special

A Rosso Corsa Ferrari with a Tan Leather Interior is a timeless, investment-grade specification, and the inclusion of original owner’s books, service books, spare wheel, tool kit, and trickle charger make it a turn-key collector’s car. And this car has only covered 9,101 km, making it an exceptionally well-preserved example with incredibly low mileage.

With naturally aspirated V12 Ferraris becoming extinct, the 599 GTB Fiorano is one of the last true driver’s cars, combining old-school Ferrari soul with modern performance.
